Sri Lankan chambers step up trade visits to KL

COLOMBO: With Malaysia and Sri Lanka stepping up trade and investment ties, another Sri Lanka business chamber is visiting Kuala Lumpur for talks on furthering investments, officials said.

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) is taking a business delegation to Malaysia in a visit scheduled from April 22 to 27. The visit is being coordinated by the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia and chamber groups there.

Malaysia has been Sri Lanka's biggest foreign investor in three years, running up to 2006 with Telekom Malaysia's local partner Dialog Telekom being the most profitable company on the Colombo bourse.

Last week, Malaysian construction firm, MTD Construction Sdn Bhd, acquired a major stake in a Sri Lankan company with lucrative real estate assets and it is said to be in talks with the Government on building a superhighway to the central hills.

Malaysian businesses are eyeing Kandy in addition to other urban cities outside Colombo for investment opportunities.

During the NCCSL-led visit, the delegates will interact with their counterparts in Malaysia to promote Sri Lankan products in the Malaysian market. They will also find suppliers of required products and services in Malaysia and to study high technology applied in Malaysian industry and agriculture.

The delegation is also expected to meet the relevant government organisations engaged in trade, industry and commerce.

Delegates will have meetings with representatives of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, Small and Medium Industries Development Corporation (Smidec), SME Association of Malaysia and Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia. - Bernama
