Jaffna ready to celebrate New Year

The people of Jaffna are getting ready to celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year. The situation in Jaffna has significantly improved and it is much better than two months ago, Jaffna GA K. Ganesh said yesterday.

He said that since the private sector joined in transporting goods the prices of essential items and all other goods have decreased and most goods are available at reasonable prices almost on par with prices prevailing in the rest of the country.

Vegetables have become inexpensive. Fish is still expensive, at Rs.400 to Rs.500 per kilo. People are satisfied with the situation, he added.

Arrangements have already been made to transport more goods to Jaffna by sea. Arrangements have also been made to transport red onions, tobacco, palmyrah products, beetroot, cigar, cigar powder and cigar products produced by Jaffna farmers either to Trincomalee or to Colombo when the ships return. Sending Jaffna products to the South commenced last October, he added.

Ganesh pointed out there is a delay in construction activities in Jaffna due to non-availability of cement and arrangements are being made to send cement to Jaffna just after the New Year Festival.

Steps should be taken seek the possibility of extending fishing to a larger area without compromising security. Livelihood support activities should also be improved.

There is a very high demand for transport services between Jaffna and Colombo but at the moment about 400 passengers are being transported per day by the Green Ocean ship while four flights operate transporting 200 passengers per day.

At the moment Expo Air and Aero Lanka operate two flights per day between Jaffna and Colombo, he added.
