Egypt-Sri Lanka talks on enhancing oil refining capacity

COLOMBO: The Egyptian Minister for Petroleum Amin Sameh Samir Fahmy, during a meeting with Minister of Petroleum and Petroleum Resource Development A. H. M. Fowzie, agreed for continued discussion on future co-operation in the field of enhancing Sri Lanka’s oil refining capacity from 50,000 to 100,000 barrels per day, the Petroleum Ministry said in a press release.

Minister Fowzie was in Cairo attending an Islamic Conference and took the opportunity to meet the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum. Minister Fowzie sought to continue, a discussion, he had on a previous occasion on the future co-operation particularly in the field of enhancing Sri Lanka’s oil refining capacity from 50,000 to 100,000 barrels per day.

He further emphasized on the Egyptian commitment to undertake a feasibility study on this project in order to finalise the negotiations. The Egyptian Minister agreed to undertake the feasibility study and instructed his Under Secretary who participated at the discussion to send a letter indicating their commitment.

Minister Fowzie while thanking for the corporation extended by Egypt, indicated that he would like to obtain assistance in training Sri Lankan technical staff in the field of refining operational engineering and related technical services.

Both Ministers also discussed the feasibility of the Egyptian involvement in onshore and offshore exploration activities in Sri Lanka. Minister Fowzie also extended an invitation to the Egyptian Minister to visit Sri Lanka at a mutually convenient time.
