Suspected LTTEer with British citizenship remanded

The Colombo Magistrate ordered the detention of a British citizen who is alleged to have smuggled in high-tech communications equipment for the LTTE.

Additional Magistrate Manjula Tilakaratne made this order following an application by the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID). In its application the TID had informed court that investigations had revealed that the suspect had close connections with the LTTE’s international intelligence network and investigations were underway to find whether he had collected money for the LTTE.

The suspect had been arrested in Wellawatta, and a load of high tech communications equipment which the suspect is said to have smuggled into the country was retained at the Sri Lanka Customs office at Katunayake, the TID said.

In its application the TID said that further investigations were being conducted and requested that the suspect be further detained.

The court allowed the application and ordered the police to file a further report on the investigation.
