COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Seven Tamil rebels and one government soldier were killed in clashes between army troops and separatists in Sri Lanka's volatile northwest, the military said Monday.

Clashes broke out when insurgents attacked soldiers patrolling ahead of a defense line in northwestern Mannar district on Sunday, said Lt. Col. Upali Rajapakse, a senior military official.

He said soldiers killed seven rebels in the confrontation and one soldier also died.

Sri Lanka's northwest region has become a flashpoint in escalating violence.
