7 rebels, 3 soldiers killed in Sri Lanka's volatile north and east

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Seven Tamil Tiger rebels and three police commandos were killed in separate incidents in Sri Lanka's troubled north and east, the military said Sunday.

A vehicle carrying police commandos hit a land mine Sunday in eastern Sri Lanka, killing three, an official at the Media Center for National Security said on condition of anonymity in accordance with policy.

Four other commandos were wounded in the blast, allegedly triggered by Tamil Tiger rebels in Kokkadicholai in Batticaloa district, he added.

Late Saturday night, soldiers found two rebel bodies in the village of Karadiyanaru, also in Batticaloa district, the official said. The bodies had cyanide suicide capsules strung from their necks, like many rebels, and were believed to have been killed in a previous clash, he said.

Separately, Tamil Tiger rebels attacked an army foot patrol in the north on Saturday night, triggering a gunbattle that left five insurgents dead, the military spokesman said.
