Australian police arrests two for funding Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka

May 01, Colombo: Australian Federal Police arrested two men after raids in Sydney and Melbourne this morning on suspicion of fundraising for the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka.

The two Australians aged 32 and 36 are accused of raising funds under the pretext of tsunami relief and funneling the money to the Tigers, a terrorist organization.

Australia considers the LTTE as a terrorist organization.

The 32-year-old man has been charged with three offences related to being a member of a terrorist organization, and knowingly making funds available to a terrorist organization. The 36-year-old man is to be charged later this afternoon. The two men face a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail if found guilty of the accusations against them.

The police officials said that the Australian Federal Government's new laws on terrorism gave the police the power to make the arrests. However they asserted that the men are no threat to Australia.
