S.Gajendran, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian was evicted from the Parliament session yesterday, Thursday the 10th of May, for his anti-state remarks made during the emergency debate on the 09th of May.
Speaker W J M Lokubandara had to remove Mr. Gajendran from the House yesterday, as he did not heed a request made to make an apology over his statement.
Several parliamentarians expressed views on Mr. Gajendran's statement. Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle called on the Speaker to consult the Attorney General and also his lawyers and discuss the Acts related to the constitution and parliamentary powers and give a decision as to what action that can be initiated.
Leader of the House Nimal Siripala De Silva said all Members of Parliament had taken oaths under the 6th amendment to the constitution to protect the unitary status of the country and to act against terrorism. As such, Mr. Gajendran's statement had breached this pledge. This is the first occasion that such an incident had happened in parliament. The Minister said some interpretation had to be obtained on the breach of the pledge. He called on the Speaker to direct this matter to the Attorney General on what action should be initiated.
Minister Mano Wijeratne called on the Speaker to remove Mr. Gajendran from the House, if he is not prepared to withdraw his statement or make an apology.
Member Wimal Weerawansa said all Members of Parliament had given a pledge not to support separatism nor to act or appear on its behalf, under the 6th amendment to the constitution. He also queried to the regard placed by the people in parliament. Mr. Weerawansa noted that no one had the right of making such an open threat, simply because of being an MP.
Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera said they are against terrorism. He emphasised that they fully object to finding a solution to this problem by making threats to the people, the government or the MPs.
