Foreign Minister denounces LTTE attacks and welcomes international support

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama briefed representatives of the Colombo-based Diplomatic Corps this afternoon (30th) on matters of current interest to the diplomatic community especially relevant to security issues.

Minister Bogollagama stressed that the Government was fully capable of meeting any challenges from the LTTE terrorist outfit and reiterated that all effective steps had been taken to thwart the attempted attack of the LTTE.

He pointed out that the alertness and swift manner in which the Armed Forces and Police reacted, as well as the vigilance of the general public resulted in the LTTE having to abort its destructive, horrendous acts which were becoming a problem for the entire region.

Whilst noting that the new threat had been ascertained, the Minister stated that short and long term measures were being implemented to ensure the safety and security of civil, economic and military installations. Highlighting their destructive nature, Minister Bogollagama reiterated that the LTTE was a global menace and collective action was necessary to defeat such destructive forces of terrorism.

Foreign Minister Bogollagama commended and thanked the international community for their initiatives to curb the LTTE's international illegal activities. He also appreciated the recent actions initiated to investigate such activities by the authorities of the United States, EU countries as well as India.

Having returned last week after visiting Italy, Greece and Saudi Arabia, the Foreign Minister noted that the respective Governments had expressed support and given assurances to counter acts of terrorism, curb human trafficking, money laundering and illegal fund raising by the LTTE and its support groups.

Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Chief of Defence Staff briefed the Diplomats on the nature of the attempted air attacks by the LTTE and the security measures being implemented.

Mr. T. B. Maduwegedara, Acting Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also present at the briefing.
