Chennai, 05 May, (Asiantribune.com): Dr. Subramanian Swamy, leader of the Janata Party, has expressed his disappointment on the devolution proposals put out by the ruling SLFP this week. He says that the current proposal is "not even an improvement on what the Sinhala majoirty had offered in 1981."
He says" "The devolution proposal of the ruling SLFP in Sri Lanka has deeply disappointed all well wishers of Sri Lanka’s territorial integrity and unfettered sovereignty. The call for a separate Tamil Eelam nation in the island had gained ground in the 1970s and 1980s. When the Sinhala majority parties consistently went back on signed agreements on devolution with moderate democratic Gandhian leaders like Chelvanayagam.
"The present SLFP proposals are showing the same mentality of retrogression. Their current proposal is not even in improvement on what the Sinhala majority had offered in 1981.
"Hence, I condemn this insensitivity to Tamil human rights by the ruling party, and re-affirm that those Indians, who have consistently opposed the LTTE terrorism, will equally oppose disguised or covert Sinhala hegemonism. Either Tamils must get a federal constitution or Eelam will become inevitable.
"At the same time, I condemn the UK government decision to send an emissary to negotiate a new ceasefire agreement between the Sri Lanka government and the LTTE. The LTTE is a proclaimed terrorist organization whose leaders are wanted by law in India for murder, narcotics & gun running, and for training other terrorists’ organization in India. Hence there is no legal basis for anyone to negotiate with the LTTE.More>>
