Elephant goes mad in Sri Lanka capital

A fifteen-year-old elephant went out of control in heavy traffic in the Sri Lanka capital Colombo making some hundreds of people in the crowded street to flee in chaos this morning.

Police had to close the street and deploy a large number of Police personnel to control the situation while hundreds of people thronged to the street to catch a glimpse of the incident.

The elephant, which was brought to Colombo to attend a Hindu religious procession suddenly started to act violently after seeing the people, organizers said.

However after more than an hour, the mahout was able to get the elephant under control, but due to the incident several houses and vehicles were damaged.

A severe traffic congestion prevailed in the adjacent busy roads that are in the heart of the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.
