Keeping the heat in your bedroom

by Eugene Henderson. Thursday, 8 March 2007 Forget global warming – things are hotting up in the bedroom thanks to the ultimate guide on how to have green sex.

Lovers can now indulge in red-hot love-making without any fears of a knock-on effect for the climate or using up too much energy.

Greenpeace has released a list of strategies for “getting it on for the good of the planet”, suggesting “you can be a bomb in bed without nuking the planet”.

And online magazine treehugger.com has just published a guide on “how to green your sex life”.

One adult store in North America has even announced it will no longer sell sex toys containing phthalates, chemicals which are believed to be hazardous to humans and the environment.

In Canada and the US, people who want to pleasure each other but not pollute the planet can buy everything from bamboo bedsheets to organic lubricant and even “eco-undies”. Now the trend is catching on in the UK.

Getting green in the bedroom includes turning out the lights while making love, lingerie made from renewable fibres such as hemp, organic massage oils and not buying PVC or vinyl aids. Showers should be taken together. You can even buy S & M paddles made from sustainable timber.

US firm Babeland’s Eco-Sexy Kit has a phthalate-free vibrator, soy massage candle and natural lubricant.

A company spokesman said: “We have to look at every piece of our lives, including our sexuality, and ask, ‘How is this healthy for me, how is this healthy for the planet?’”
