Iraqi Deputy PM wounded in suicide attack

Iraq's Sunni Deputy Prime Minister was wounded today in a suicide bomb attack at a prayer hall in Baghdad that killed at least two people, police said.

Salam al-Zobaie, one of two deputies to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, was rushed to an American military hospital inside the heavily fortified green zone for treatment.

The bomber blew himself up as Mr al-Zobaie and other worshippers were leaving the hall, which is next to his house and office, in central Baghdad. At least 10 other people were injured in the blast.

Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Garver, US military spokesman, said he could give no information on Mr al-Zobaie’s injuries or his condition.

Earlier Mr al-Zobaie’s spokesman said that he had survived that attack unharmed. “Nothing happened to [Mr] Zobaie, he is alive,” the spokesman told Reuters.
