Mowlana moves in Mangala matter

Strong indications emerged yesterday to suggest that former minister Mangala Samaraweera would likely be granted a pardon by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and restored to his previous position in the government.
Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, said he would speak to Mr. Samaraweera who returned from Singapore yesterday regarding the dispute with the Rajapaksa administration and try his best to persuade the former minister to mend fences with the government and his party.
“President Rajapaksa is ready to forgive and forget as Mr. Samaraweera has done yeoman service to the party. It is up to Mr. Samaraweera to accept the hand of goodwill extended by the President, who is a humane person and will never forget the help given by anybody,” Mr. Mowlana said.
He said members of the government would be glad if Mr. Samaraweera was given back a cabinet portfolio to continue his service to the country.
When asked about the fate of former minister Sripathi Sooriyarachchi, he said the case of Mr. Sooriyarachchi was entirely different as he had dragged personal matters into the dispute.
Mr. Mowlana said the President was ready to even consider Mr. Sooriyarachchi, if he tendered an open apology and accepted his mistakes.
