Thoppigala - Digital camera reveals LTTE prisoners

Security forces carrying out a clearing operation at Thoppigala (July 24) recovered a digital camera left behind by the fleeing LTTE terrorists, which gave a wealth of information, particularly about the LTTE's prisoners.

Defence sources said it contained photographs of 73 people held prisoner by the LTTE in Thoppigala. The photographs revealed that the prisoners had been tortured and exposed the inhuman conditions. They were of Tamil civilians imprisoned by the LTTE.
It is known that innocent civilians were detained under inhuman conditions for refusing to support the LTTE, pay ransom to the terrorists, or for their refusal to carry out the LTTE's orders.

A group of prisoners held in Thoppigala who escaped from the LTTE revealed to the security forces that over a period of time the LTTE tortured and killed nearly 100 people in their custody. The fate of the prisoners in the photographs found in the camera was not known.
